Camping Macquarie Heads
Camping Macquarie Heads, a campground located on the Northern end of Macquarie Harbour, Strahan West on the West Coast Tasmania. To access the Macquarie Heads camping area, travel from the small tourist town of Strahan on the Ocean Road for app. 4 kilometres. Then turn left onto the C251 – along this road you will pass the Swan Basin Picnic Area. The campground Macquarie Heads is 11 kilometres down this road, and is reasonably large and has good shady, well-grassed sites immediately next to Macquarie Harbour. There are resident caretakers on site who collect camping fees, and who make sure that campers are camping in designated areas and that the rules are not being broken. This low-cost campground is suitable for caravans, campervans, camper trailers and motorhomes. Fishing is a feature of Macquarie Harbour, and the boat ramp is located right next to the camping area. There are public toilets and a dump point. Visitors are able to drive their 4WD onto Ocean Beach to fish or to drive along Ocean Beach. To camp at Macquarie Heads, you must carry your own fresh water and firewood. There are picnic facilities at nearby Swan Basin picnic area. Strahan is a very popular tourist destination in Tasmania and the starting point for famous iconic Gordon River Cruise. The Macquarie Heads Campground gets very busy over Christmas / New Year, Easter, long weekends and school holidays. There is a dump point at nearby Strahan, the boat ramp is excellent and can accommodate large boats. There is also a jetty for the kids to go fishing. This is one of our favourite campsites in Tasmania and one we think you will love.
