Dee Dam Bay offers peaceful, informal bush camping beside Dee Lagoon in Tasmania’s Central Highlands, with access from the Lake Echo Road area. Surrounded by highland bushland and open water, it’s an appealing spot for self-sufficient campers looking for somewhere quiet and remote, particularly those interested in fishing. The Tasmanian Inland Fisheries Service confirms that informal lakeshore camping is permitted around Dee Lagoon, with several camping locations available around the water. There are no formal bookings required and camping is basic, so visitors should arrive prepared for a genuine off-grid experience. Facilities are extremely limited, with no toilets, showers, power or drinking water, and campers are encouraged to carry a portable or chemical toilet and take all rubbish away with them. Vehicles should remain on formed roads and tracks, while campfires are restricted to formal fireplaces or suitable fire pots and are subject to seasonal fire restrictions. Road and track conditions can deteriorate after wet weather, so larger caravans and two-wheel-drive vehicles should exercise caution when choosing a campsite.
Fishing at Dee Lagoon
Dee Dam Bay is particularly attractive to anglers, with Dee Lagoon well known for both brown and rainbow trout fishing. Fishing is possible from the shore, although having a small boat can provide access to more of the lagoon. A current Tasmanian inland angling licence and applicable seasonal fishing regulations are required. No facilities – campers need their own drinking water, firewood and warm clothing. Reached from the Lyell Highway (A10) via the Osterley turn-off at Bradys Lake, or from Ouse via the C176 and C173.
