Butlers Gorge Camping

Camping Butlers Gorge is free, no bookings can be made and dogs are allowed if kept on a lead at all times. This is very basic bush camping used mostly by fishermen and suitable mostly for camping in a camper-trailer, small caravan or campervan. Please note that tent camping is possible in a couple of spots, but the ground is hard and rocky. There are no facilities whatsoever for persons camping at Butlers Gorge, meaning that you must be fully self-sufficient to camp at this location. The road leading to Butlers Gorge campsite doesn’t really lend itself to big rigs, however, you can camp Butlers Gorge in a big rig if you take particular care on the roads. Butlers Gorge is at the Southern end of Lake King William.  Butlers Gorge is accessible from Hobart on the A10 Lyell Highway in approximately 2 hours.To access the Butlers Gorge camping area, turn right off the A10 Highway into the C603 which is located some 2 kilometres south of the Tarraleah access road. Follow the signs to the Clark Dam for 16 kilometres and then turn right. After a further distance of app. 400 metres, continue straight ahead where you will find a camping area beside the Lake. Keep to existing tracks at all times, remove all rubbish, no shooting, fires only in formal fireplaces or firepits. Do not cut down trees or damage vegetation. Lake King William is a massive body of water and a prized fishing lake in the central highlands of Tasmania. Lake King William is a large hydro impoundment fed by the Derwent River from Lake St Clair. When the lake was created, the Clark Dam at Butlers Gorge was the highest in the southern hemisphere.
