Camping Cape Raoul Shipsterns
CAMPGROUND NOW PERMANENTLY CLOSED (January 2021)
Camping Cape Raoul Shipsterns Bluff, Tasman National Park Tasmania. There is no camping on the walk to Cape Raoul or Shipsterns Bluff and no toilets inside the national park on these walks. However, immediately adjacent to the car park at the start of the walks to Cape Raoul and Shipsterns Bluff is an excellent privately operated small campground that will cost you $10 per person per night, and where you can camp in tents or vehicles. Camping in vehicles in the car park (campervans, motorhomes, caravans, or normal cars is strictly prohibited and rangers patrol the area). The hike to Cape Raoul is 12 kilometers round trip if you turn around at the viewpoint by the depression and 14 kilometers round trip if you press on to the very end of Cape Raoul. The privately operated campground has plenty of room and excellent grassy sites that can be booked or you can simply turn up and approach the operators, Raoul Bay Retreat. The campground has a very basic toilet, however, there are no excellent composting toilets at the car park. There is no ability and no need to book for camping – simply turn up and follow the instructions on the gate. Please note that PETS are strictly prohibited as this is a national park – you are required to have a National Parks Pass to complete the Shipsterns Bluff bushwalk or Cape Raoul track. A popular activity for visitors is to arrive early and complete the Shipsterns Bluff walk in 1 day (to do the walk justice you need to allow app. 6-hours for the round trip), then camp overnight at this campground before completing the Cape Raoul walk the following morning. Of course, you can complete the walks in the other order if preferred. Please note the car park at the start of these walks can be very full, however recently additional parking has been added. We recommend if you are visiting just to do either walk in a single day, that you arrive early. Both walks are truly spectacular and highly recommended. Again, please note that these are not easy walks and you will need to be suitably equipped with good walking apparel, food, and water. Please make sure you register at the information hut before commencing the walks to Shipsterns Bluff or Cape Raoul.
