Camping Penstock Lagoon
Penstock Lagoon camping area offers true bush camping in the beautiful central highlands of Tasmania and is very popular with fishermen during the Tassie trout season. There is no cost to camp at Penstock Lagoon is free, and dogs are OK if kept under control. There is a gravel boat ramp located next to the camping area, and also a small jetty. There are no toilets or showers provided at Penstock Lagoon, meaning you must be fully self-sufficient to camp at Penstock Lagoon. It is recommended you carry your own freshwater. This location is best suited to tent-based camping; small campervans, camper trailers and are OK however please again note there are no suitable amenities for campervans and caravans. Penstock Lagoon is a shallow body of water with an average depth of app. 1-metre. There are also a number of regulations and recommendations relating to boating on Penstock Lagoon designed to manage environmental impacts of vessels on this waterway including a preferred type of outboard motor and maximum recommended boat size. Please note that Penstock Lagoon is a fly-fishing-only waterway, so don’t turn up expecting to baitfish or spin.
There are designated camping areas at Penstock Lagoon, even though it is a bush camping area. People camping at Penstock Lagoon are encouraged to bring portable toilets or be sure to walk at least 100 metres from the water, dig a 15-centimetre hole and bury waste with toilet paper. The maximum stay for camping or caravans is 14 days. Penstock Lagoon is located off the Marlborough Hwy (B11), 7 km west of Miena (Great Lakes). From the highway, the Penstock Lagoon is a further 500 m to the grassed camping areas located along the shore. Fires are allowed only in existing fire pits.
